What ill health benefits are available if I belong to TASSS?
TASSS members have two separate ill health benefits:
- A lump sum benefit on total and permanent disablement; and
- A disability income benefit on temporary disablement.
Part of these benefits are insured by TASSS Insurers. The Scheme's Insurer will require medical reports to assess whether you are eligible to receive a disablement benefit. Further assessments will be made from time to time if you are receiving the disability income benefit on temporary disablement.
Total and Permanent Disablement
You will be eligible to receive a Total and Permanent Disablement (TPD) Benefit if:
- You have been absent from work due to injury or illness for three consecutive months; and
- The Trustee and the Scheme's Insurer are satisfied that you are never likely to return to work in any job for which you are reasonable qualified by education, training or experience.
You are covered against TPD as defined in the Scheme's Trust Deed, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Your TPD Benefit prior to normal retirement age is a lump sum equal to your Accrued Retirement Benefit, if you are aged 55 or older. If you are under age 55, then the Benefit is a lump sum equal to the total of:
- Your Accrued Retirement Benefit Multiple, and
- 19% of your potential future service to age 55 (in years and complete months)
multiplied by your Final Average Salary.
Temporary Disablement
The TASSS provides a benefit if you are away from work due to illness or injury for a period greater than three months and the Trustee is satisfied that you are currently unable to return to the job you had before your illness. The Temporary Disablement Benefit is payable for a maximum of two years but would cease on:
- Death
- Reaching the Normal Retirement Age
- Becoming eligible for TPD benefit
- Ceasing to be a member of TASSS
- Returning to any paid or unpaid work
- Ceasing to be under regular care of a doctor, or
- Failing to provide evidence for continuing disablement.
The normal benefit is a monthly income of 75% of your superannuation salary, however it may be reduced by income amounts received from other sources, eg workers compensation, social security or sick leave payments.
This is only a summary of what you may be entitled to under the TASSS. Contact us for full details.
